FDA Publishes Final Rule: Bar Code Label Requirements For Human Drug Products
and Biological Products
The Food and Drug Administration culminates a years worth of study and debate
finalizing a rule requiring NDC bar code labels on most prescription
drugs. The ruling paves the way for 'scan and check' systems like HealthLYNX to
be utilized by hospitals and clinics to improve patient safety, avoid costly
litigation, reduce malpractice insurance, earn more favorable accredidation
reviews, and improve the accuracy of billing procedures.

770,000
people experience serious complications or die from adverse drug effects (ADEs)
while hospitalized annually. That's an average of four people per 100
admissions. How have ADEs affected you and
your hospital?
HealthLYNX ™ is a wireless, bar code enabled point
of care system that communicates, tracks, and audits the entire pharmaceutical
delivery process. HealthLYNX is unique in that it integrates
pharmacy, doctors, and nurses in one system.
Responding to a growing public concern the FDA began a series
of mandates aimed at improving patient safety. One such mandate requiring the
use of NDC barcodes on all medications was passed in February of 2004. HealthLYNX
utilizes these bar codes to ensure the right medication gets to the right
patient in the right does and at the right time.
Computerized Physician Order Entry systems (CPOEs) and Clinical Decision
Support Systems (CDSSs) have demonstrated significant improvements in ADE rates
but have met with user resistance due to poor design and prohibitive costs.
HealthLYNX resolves these issues by providing an easy to
use integrated system at a price point that is attainable by smaller and
mid sized hospitals who often are excluded from enterprise medical software
packages due to their exorbitant costs.
